Welcome to St Peter's Church, Swainsthorpe

We are a small and friendly village church, seeking to serve our local community.  We have particularly strong links with “Swainsthorpe in Bloom” through our churchyard which is managed for wildlife.

Our worship is simple and accessible.  On the first and third Sunday of each month, there is a traditional quiet service of Holy Communion from the book of Common Prayer.  On the second Sunday, there is a lively afternoon service involving lots of activities for children and a shared tea for everyone.

The “Swainsthorpe Special” Service on the 4th Sunday of each month is a worship service with well known hymns and a short but highly relevant sermon.  We feel it is important to apply our faith to our real lives.  Our hopes for the future, include extending our lovely building to include toilets and kitchen and improving the heating so it is suitable for wider community use.

Swainsthorpe Church: The Church Building and It's History

St Peter's is a small medieval flint church with a round west tower betraying its Saxo-Norman origins (listed grade 2). There were originally two churches in the village, but there is no  trace of Swainsthorpe St Mary's near the river, abandoned before the Reformation.

The round west tower of St Peter's is probably from the 12th century and it has been traditionally thought that this was built on a pre-existing Saxon nave.
